Minnesota Senate Is Last Stop For Vikings Stadium

By: Admin

The Minnesota Vikings’ pursuit of a $975 million stadium went to the floor of the state Senate on Thursday and even opponents predicted it would clear its final hurdle. Gov. Mark Dayton has pledged to sign the bill that would guarantee the team’s future in the state for the next 30 years. The public expense would be high: $348 million for the state and $150 million for the city of Minneapolis. The Vikings would pay $477 million, slightly less than half the cost, after their share was raised in final negotiations. The House approved the bill 71-60 at about 3:30 a.m. Thursday. “It’s time,” Sen. Geoff Michel, a Republican from Edina, said on the Senate floor. “It’s time for us to adopt a framework that allows us to keep a Minnesota franchise. It’s time to keep the Minnesota Vikings here so that our ...

Family and friends paid tribute Sunday to a Minnesota family shaken by a deadly traffic accident. The family held a memorial service for them in Shakopee at Friendship Church. The family asked WCCO-TV to respect their privacy during the ceremony, and we honored their wishes. Afterwards, this message was posted on the family’s memorial page on Facebook “As anyone can imagine, there were no dry eyes for the 1200 people that attended. The words from the pastor were comforting as were the words spoken by various family members.”

Horse Race Gambling Deal Clears Minn. House

By: Admin

Minnesota lawmakers gave final approval Monday to late-surfacing legislation that allows more poker tables and higher betting limits at horse racing tracks and gives tribal casinos access to racing simulcasts. The House voted 97-34 to send the bill to Gov. Mark Dayton only two days after it emerged and passed the state Senate by a lopsided margin. Dayton has not declared a position and needs time to study the bill, a spokesman said. The proposal represents a rare agreement, benefiting horse track owners and the American Indian tribes that operate casinos around the state. But it may run into legal resistance, as previous attempts to allow off-track betting in Minnesota have been struck down. The measure would allow live racing at Shakopee and Columbus to be simulcast for wagering purposes at casinos around the state. The two horse tracks currently have card rooms, ...

Vikings Departure Could Lead To Large Fallout In Minnesota

By: Admin

The last professional sports team to leave Minnesota was the North Stars. They played their final game at Met Center in Bloomington in 1993 before moving to Dallas to become the Dallas Stars. Seven years after the North Stars left, the Minnesota Wild began play at Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul. But getting professional hockey to return came at a steep price. “It was extremely disappointing. After the game I can’t tell you how many people just stayed in their seat to watch, to reminisce, to think back about what great memories they had there,” said former North Stars player Tom Reid. Reid is now a radio commentator for the Minnesota Wild. His restaurant in St. Paul is filled with North Star hockey history. “When you lose something like that you don’t realize how important it is until it’s gone. And then you think- ...

2 Constitutional Amendments Heading To MN’s Nov. Ballot

By: Admin

Minnesota will have two constitutional amendments in the next election, after the House and Senate voted in favor of the latest on Wednesday. The votes for the Voter I.D. amendment fell nearly entirely along party lines. Republicans voted for it, but Democrats opposed it. Republicans largely support the bill. They consider it fraud prevention especially in a state with a history of close elections. But Democrats say it’ll suppress votes of students, minorities and elderly Minnesotans, all largely democratic voters who don’t have access to a voter I.D. or would be burdened to get one. The amendments will ask voters simple yes or no questions, like the one below: “Shall the Minnesota Constitution be amended to require all voters to present valid photo identification to vote and to require the state to provide free identification to eligible voters, effective July 1, 2013?” If you leave ...
